SLDF Mech Bay – 3d Printed Terrain – Battletech

SLDF Base Terrain

Here is the start of my next terrain project. For this one I am working on a set of terrain pieces for the former SLDF base and plan to include several larger pieces that can have additional details such as interiors and LED lighting. The Battletech mercenaries campaign I have been running with my kids is working towards a raid on a former SLDF base so these pieces will be included on our game table once I have a full set painted and ready to go.

I planned to do a larger HPG array next but after doing some sketches for a lance sized mech bay I got excited and started the modeling process. Here are the first few stages for the bay.

Main shell and front towers for the mech bay started.
Windows and gateway getting detailed
Most of the exterior is complete and ready to start testing the prints

Mechbay Design

Part of designing this mech bay will also include adding some LED lighting. They won’t be required and the model is designed in a way so that the LED mounting points fit into the overall building with or without lights installed.

The first few test pieces with the micro LEDs were too bright so those spots are being reworked to allow the light to sit lower inside the print with the light casting out onto the walls and doors.

Lance Mech Bay Design Goals

  • Removable roof with magnet locations designed into the print.
  • Opening bay doors for the mechs to pass through.
  • Easy to print, sticking with the no supports needed design.
  • 4 bays for mechs to hold a full lance.
Light is too bright and distracting when the LED is exposed. Next print will have it recessed in the pillar by the mechbay door.

Thanks for checking out the progress and check back soon to see the finished terrain. I hope to have this one tested and assembled within the next few weeks and once I am sure it all works correctly the files will be available in the Etsy store.
